Budgeting doesn’t have to mean making sacrifices. In fact, you can enjoy many aspects of stunning Charleston for free. You’ll find that the Low Country of South Carolina boasts an array of activities that won’t cost you a penny.
Not sure where to begin? No matter what you like to do while visiting this historic Mecca, you’ll find it on the cheap. Here’s a list of free ways to enjoy Charleston:
1. Hit the Farmers’ Market
It’s a great way to enjoy a Saturday morning in Charleston, and the best part is there’s no entrance fee. Check out local produce, both organic and conventional, from the area's finest farmers as well as fresh made pasta, soaps, and home grown herbs. The park at Marion Square has long been the home of some of Charleston's most exciting festivities and the farmers' market is particularly popular. The farmers’ market is open from 8 am to 2 pm each Saturday and locals flock here. It’s a bustling atmosphere and a great way to enjoy the non-touristy side of the city. 2. Visit Charles Pinckney HouseHe's known as the "forgotten founder" because Charles Pinckney is the least known signer of the United States Constitution. Today, the home of Pinckney is a National Historic site located in the Low Country of South Carolina. Snee Farm is the name of his coastal plantation, a site that helped frame the life of this important American Patriot. The 715 acre site was purchased in 1754 by Pinckney's father and he later inherited it. Best part, this National Historic site is free to the public.
3. Explore Fort Moultrie
Fort Moultrie has witnessed history all the way back to the Revolutionary War. It was still incomplete when Commodore Sir Peter Parker and nine warships attacked it on June 28, 1776. The fort lay in disrepair after the Revolution and it wasn't until 1793 that it was repaired in order to safeguard the coast against invasion. It was part of a larger system of coastal fortification built to safeguard the colonies. It's another National Historic site that's free to the public.
4. Visit Sullivan’s Island BeachSullivan’s Island is a favorite Charleston beach to visit. Just outside of town, but a world away from the hustle and bustle. It’s a laid back retreat with relaxed, casual dining establishments, charming neighborhoods, and sprawling beaches. It’s free in cost and rich in experience. While exploring Fort Moultrie, take some time to enjoy the beach and afterwards consider a cocktail or meal at Poe’s Tavern or Fiery Ron’s Hometeam Barbecue.
