Charleston's cultural and gastronomical renaissance has meant that restaurants throughout the Low Country have begun to...
Charleston is undoubtedly known for its restaurant scene. No matter what you're in the market for, you'll likely to find it in this Low Country city.
Restaurants no longer take the local bounty for granted. From fine dining to casual grub, take some time to support restaurants that make sourcing local, organic, and sustainable ingredients a priority. The Low Country is blessed with an array of quality local producers, from organic vegetables, to seafood and everywhere in between. Here are some of the most impressive choices.
1. Cypress
Cypress has been nominated by the James Beard Foundation for its dynamic seasonal menu. Featuring sustainably caught fish and dry aged beef from regional producers like MiBek Farms, high quality ingredients shine on Cypress's menu. You can be sure that much of the produce came from one of the area's surrounding farms as well.
2. Fat Hen
Fat Hen features a relaxed atmosphere with an eclectic mix of French and Low Country cuisine. Much of the ingredients on the menu are provided by nearby Neuville Farms, the owner's own farm. Fred Neuville also raises his own fat hens to provide meat and eggs for the restaurant. You can taste the difference with every bite, knowing that your food likely traveled less distance to get there than you did.
3. FIG
Each course at FIG features local delicacies. Start off with a salad of local Wadmalaw lettuces or the marinated heirloom eggplant. For the main course, consider the sautéed soft-shell crabs (in season) or the Caw Caw Creek suckling pig. Caw Caw Creek is one of the country's best Heritage pork producers and it just happens to be located in the great state of South Carolina.
4. Monza
One of Monza's signature dishes, the wood roasted asparagus with a local farm egg, is all local all the time. Monza also serves plump, delicious local shrimp and produce atop each meticulously constructed Neapolitan pizza.
5. Slightly North of Broad
With an abundance of local foods prepared in a thoughtful manner, the food at Slightly North of Broad is an experience in itself. Enjoy the Low Country vegetable plate, which changes daily. The dish features the most beautiful, delicate produce from the area. Also try the John's Island Strawberry Salad in season. This East Bay Street restaurant takes extra care in choosing purveyors and they even appear on their website.
6. The Daily Dose
The Daily Dose is good mood food with tons of heart. The Daily Dose serves up loads of tasty local produce on its vegan/vegetarian menu. The portions are big and the food is fresh. Even a meat lover will feel at home at this Bohemian hot spot.
