The Parliament Buildings represent a walk through the history of Canada’s parliamentary system. With their vaulted ceilings, marble floors and dramatic lighting, the buildings present a captivating combination of grandeur and vitality. Setting aside a few hours or spending the day wandering the grounds will be time well spent for visitors to Canada’s capital.
Thousands gather to take free guided tours of the Centre Block where visitors can watch Parliament in action from the galleries while an audio guide explains the actions. The East Block’s focal point is an office recreated to look like the office of Canada’s first prime minister, Sir John A Macdonald. Outdoor walking tours, self-guided booklets, sound and light shows, fireworks and the changing of the guard are just some of the activities visitors can enjoy while visiting the Parliament Buildings.
The Peace Tower is an amazing place to visit. Named in commemoration of Canada’s commitment to peace, the third hosts the Memorial Chamber which honours Canadians who have died in armed conflict. The Tower also boasts an observation area where visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Parliament Hill.
Within walking distance of the Parliament Buildings, there is an array of hotels and motels to choose from. Visitors staying in downtown Ottawa will be able to walk to the Parliament Buildings quite comfortable. Restaurants comprising of steak houses, Asian and Italian food and seafood are also close by.
