Perhaps the most famous theater in St. Louis is the Fabulous Fox Theatre. The Fox Theatre is home to its own season full of world famous musicals and shows. It also attracts visitors by hosting several other shows, concerts and events throughout the year. Located in Grand Center, the Fox Theatre is a incredibly beautiful theatre that every art supporters needs to experience. Also located in Grand Center is the Grandel Theater. And although this theater is much smaller than the Fox, it is still home to great productions. The Grandel Theater is the official theater of the award-winning troupe, the Black Repertory Company and hosts several other smaller art companies in the area. Once a church, the building was renovated in 1992 to house the 450-seat state-of-the-art Grandel Theater.
During the summer months theater goes can experience one of St. Louis' more unique theaters, The Muny. The Muny is located in St. Louis' Forest Park and is one of the nations oldest and largest outdoor theater. Their season runs from mid-June to mid-August and averages around 7 shows. Their productions include local talent as well as experienced actors from around the world. The Muny offers 1,500 free tickets to every show on a first come, first served basis. Another more intimate theater in St. Louis is the Playhouse Theater in Westport Plaza. This 240 seat theater offers a full bar and plenty of fun shows. Since it opened its curtain in 2004, it has been providing only the funniest of comedies. They support local talent as well as traveling groups and improv groups. St. Louis is home to several local dance companies that perform often. One company, however, is committed to bringing the best dance from around the world to St. Louis. Dance St. Louis has been bringing big names in dance to the midwest since 1966. Their productions are held at both the Fox Theatre and Touhill Performing Arts Center. They also provide local dancers the opportunity to take classes from these incredible artists and provide week long lessons to under privileged schools in the area.
