A popular activity to take part in during the cooler months is apple picking. Within the six New England states, there are hundreds of orchards to choose from that offer a wide variety of different pick-your-own choices. Check out some of these orchards during your next visit to New England for a fun family outing.
In Connecticut, a popular stop is Drazen Orchards in Cheshire. The property is open to visitors during the harvesting season for pick-your-own crops which include apples, peaches, plums, pears and much more. After a long day of gathering the ripest fruit, enjoy a cup of freshly squeezed apple cider. Much like Drazen Orchards, Lyman Orchards, also located in Connecticut, has a wide selection of pick-your-own items. Along with this, children can navigate their way through a giant corn maze, indulge in some of the most delicious pies, play Frisbee golf on the grounds and enjoy wagon rides. Rhode Island attracts visitors to the Young Family Farm located in Little Compton. Here, you can pick fresh fruits and vegetables including strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, apples and pumpkins during the harvesting months. If you don’t have time to pick-your-own, no worries! Stop by Young Family Farm to pick up the fresh produce you’re craving; it will be waiting at the stand, already picked for you!
As you travel north, you will make your way through Massachusetts and head up to New Hampshire and Vermont. In Vermont, the Scott Farm Apple Orchard is a popular destination. At Scott Farm, visitors can enjoy the 626 acre property as they pick from unusual apples and other delicious fruits. Heirloom apples, Winter Banana apples, Hidden Rose apples are a few of the exotic choices while you can also pick quince, gooseberries, medlars, Asian pears, plums, raspberries, elderberries, table grapes, pears, blueberries and peaches. If you’re in New Hampshire, be sure to make a stop at Applecrest Farm Orchard in Hampton Falls. At Applecrest, visitors can enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables, along with a visit to the creamery. At the creamery, homemade ice cream is made from happy, pasture fed cows that have not been given additional growth hormones.
In Massachusetts and Maine, there are of course, more orchards. Maine offers a few along the way including Spiller Farm which offers apples, peaches, tomatoes, beans, summer squash, zucchini, large peppers, beets, cucumbers, broccoli and more. Carlson Orchards in Harvard, Massachusetts, has been in operation since 1936. For years they have been offering wonderful products, fresh fruit and vegetables, and an inviting environment. During the season, visitors can pick blueberries, peaches, nectarines and apples along with other items. The orchard also offers cider mill tours, hayrides, a gift shop, homemade baked goods and a pumpkin patch in the fall.
