Strasburg's the most historic town in Pennsylvania's Dutch Country. Strasburg, PA was founded by Pierre Bezaillion, a frenchman, in 1693. This Amish town actually has french roots. The town was named Strasburg, after the city of Strasbourg, in the mid-1970's. Thre french that settled here were originally from the Alsace region of France and Strasbourg is the city in the Alsace region. Strasburg gradually became a town known for trade and as a stop between Philadephia and Lancaster. Farms gradually started being developed by the Amish that came into the area. America's first Turnpike, the Lancaster Turnpike, took alot of the trade industry away from Strasburg, and coupled with the fact that the rail road never became a major transportation method to or from Strasburg, Strasburg went through some financial turbulence in the late 1700's. The Strasburg Rail Road is the oldest continually operating public utility in Pennsylvania and is still in full operation today! In 1957 the Strasburg Rail Road became a tourist attraction of Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Trains...
