Tourists are undoubtedly attracted to Charleston’s history and the beaches aren’t too shabby either. Visitors come from all over the country to relish in the untouched beauty of the coast. Two famous Charleston beaches are Folly Beach and Sullivan’s Island. Both have a lot to offer depending on what you’re looking for; but if you’re looking for a little added excitement and maybe a good workout as well, Charleston is also a center of a number of exciting water sports. The water is often warm in the Low Country and you can enjoy a wide variety of activities without having to wear a wet suit for much of the year.
Kite Boarding Kite boarding has gained popularity in Charleston and at a number of beach towns along the coast. The initial investment in all of the kite boarding gear is rather expensive, and if you’re not sure what you’re doing, it can be dangerous. But you can take kite boarding lessons based on your initial skill level. Upon signing up for a lesson, you’ll be paired with an instructor that’s a good match for your base athletic skill level.
Kite boarding camps are also offered for kids on Isle of Palms, Sullivan's Island, Folly Beach, James Island, West Ashley, and all of Charleston County. Classes are separated into levels including Kite Class 1: Kite Zen, Kite Class 2: Core Basics, Kite Class 3: Extended Core Basics, and Kite Class 4: Board Balance. With each class you tag on another skill needed to kite board.
Surfing and Paddle Boarding Surfing is another beloved activity here in Charleston. If you’ve surfed before don’t forget your board so you can hit the waves at Folly Beach. If you’re new to surfing consider, consider a lesson. Palmetto Surfers offer classes as does Folly Beach Shaka Surf School. Surf camps are also available to kids. You can find a class no matter your level.
Also consider paddle boarding for a different way to ride the waves. Pawley's, Isle of Palms, and Sullivans all offer good surf spots but if you're looking for a less crowded destination, the southern end of the state is relatively quiet.
