Washington's National Cathedral is the center of holiday cheer.
Nothing says the holidays like the Washington National Cathedral. As you drive down Wisconsin Avenue in Washington, DC you can’t help but stare in awe at this mammoth cathedral. But it’s even more astonishing when you step inside.
The Washington National Cathedral's History
The National Cathedral was under construction for over 80 years, from 1907 to 1990 under the artful workmanship of five renowned architects: George Frederick Bodley, Henry Vaughan, Frohman, Robb & Little, and Philip H. Frohman. The towering structure is made of limestone and mortar with solid stone flying buttresses.
It’s been home to 15 Presidential funerals which most recently included President Gerald R. Ford (2007), President Ronald W. Reagan (2004), President Richard M. Nixon (1994), and President Lyndon B. Johnson (1973).
It’s also been home to Presidential Inaugural Prayer Services including President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1933, President Ronald Wilson Reagan in 1985, and President Barack Obama in 2009.
It's an historical landmark that also boasts a number of events throughout the month of December. Come see The National Cathedral lighted up in all its glory.
Handel’s Messiah
This is likely one of the most famous Christmas shows and audiences have been known to burst into song during the Hallelujah chorus and into tears during He Was Despised.
It's sung by the Cathedral's Choir in the style of the Baroque period. This memorable performance is sure to put you in the Christmas spirit. Tickets range in price from $25 and $85.
Dreamers & Believers Exhibit
Dreamers & Believers celebrates the centennial of the laying the Cathedral’s foundation stone in 1907, as part of its centennial festivities.
The exhibit tells the story of the building the Cathedral over 100 years ago. It paints the tale of the visionaries who dreamed of building this fantastic place of worship and the 83 years of hard work that went into its construction. The exhibit also talks about the artisans that created the various embellishments which now adorn the church.
