Like any New England state, Vermont is rich in history. It boasts a number of museums, many of which educate visitors on the historical aspects of this intriguing area. During your visit, be sure to include some of these stops along the way.
As an interesting attraction, the American Precision Museum strives to preserve the heritage of the mechanical arts & celebrates the ingenuity of our mechanical history. The museum, which is housed in the original Robbins & Lawrence Armory, holds the largest collection of historically significant machine tools in the nation. Visitors can take part in tours and educational sessions where they will learn about industrial history and the ways in which it has played a major role in the formation of this country.
The numerous tools housed at the American Precision Museum may have been used to break apart and form the massive blocks of marble and granite that were used for the buildings within the area. To learn about the history of both granite and marble, check out these two museums where you can learn about the history and geology of both resources. The Vemont Marble Museum gives visitors a chance to step back in time to learn about the beginning stages of marble production. While learning about this versatile stone, there are various exhibits and historical photographs on display as well. Much like the Marble Museum, the Vermont Granite Museum offers numerous educational opportunities based on the history of granite. As a very interesting and exciting location, the museum is housed in an authentic granite manufacturing plant with historical videos of quarry workers, owners and sculptors. Also at the museum is the Stone Arts School where visitors can explore traditional and modern stone carving techniques with working professionals.
At the Vermont Covered Bridge Museum in Bennington, visitors can experience the historical pleasure of these structures through various exhibits and hands on activities. This museum, the only one dedicated to the preservation of covered bridges helps visitors dive into the history of these legendary pieces as they learn about the engineering, construction, tools, and creators. Not only can you brush up on your history, you can also take the opportunity to build and test your very own bridge design on the computer workstations throughout. Visitors can complete this after watching two video theatre productions based on the past and present construction techniques. There is a working railroad at the museum, which showcases the six Vermont bridges along with a collection of pieces by famous artist Eric Sloane. The paintings are based on the art and analysis of covered bridges. The Bennington Museum is another great stop while you are in the area. Here, you can learn more about the history and the heritage of Southern Vermont.
