How can you find lodging deals while still enjoying the best that Charleston has to offer?
Not only does Charleston provide ample shopping and dining opportunities, the Low Country of South Carolina is also home to a host of fabulous hotels, inns, and bed and breakfasts to lay your head at night. But certain areas are much less expensive than others, especially during the more busy travel seasons.
Bed and breakfasts can offer at lot of bang for your travel buck because you can often stay in a nicer room for a lower price than if you were staying in a hotel. Additionally, breakfast is usually included in the price of the room and in some cases so is wine, cheese, and other thoughtful perks.
Downtown Charleston
The Cottage Room at Palmer’s Pinckney Inn goes for $150 and it's even cheaper during the week. The inn is well located with a gorgeous porch and includes a warm breakfast.
Or for more minimalist digs, consider the Notso Hostel. The hostel is located at 56 Spring Street and is equipped with dorms, private rooms and camping. Kitchens and bathrooms are communal. Your stay also includes a bagel breakfast, private parking, Wi-Fi, and linens. There’s another location at 33 Cannon Street. The “annex” as it’s called, is completely renovated with bamboo flooring upstairs, private parking, Wi-Fi, and self-serve oatmeal breakfast. Rooms range from $23 to 70 per night.
The Francis Marion Hotel is an ideally located, high rise by Charleston standards. Yet by no means a skyscraper. Periodically, the hotel, located right across from Charleston’s well known farmers' market, offers deals. The rooms are small but very nice and you can walk basically anywhere on the peninsula from this prime location.
Mount Pleasant
But with the exception of a few deals on the peninsula, the best lodging deals are found in areas surrounding the city. Consider Old Town Mount Pleasant. It’s a homey area just across the gorgeous Ravenel Bridge where ample hotel chains make it easy to find a hotel deal. Mount Pleasant is also perfectly located between downtown Charleston and the beaches of Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island.
This way you can spend a few days exploring downtown Charleston, meandering in and out of the historic homes, sampling Low Country cuisine, and shopping and then the remainder of your trip catching rays at the beach. The Old Town area of Mount Pleasant has great restaurants and good shopping as well, though much of the walking-friendly areas are on the peninsula.
North Charleston
North Charleston is an up and coming area, just north of the peninsula. You’ll find national chain hotels along with funky places to sample cuisine from chefs that have moved “North” for cheaper rent and more space.
Whether you choose one of the choice digs in downtown or venture outside the city to Mount Pleasant or North Charleston, there are deals to be had in this charmer of a city.
