Welcome to the Mile High City! Situated at the edge of the Rocky Mountains, Denver deserves its reputation for being an outdoor sports mecca. But with acclaimed museums, a vibrant art scene, shopping and fine dining, Denver boasts the cultural amenities of cities twice its size. Denver's Old West heritage and cosmopolitan feel make everyone, locals and tourists alike, feel at home.
Denver has been the region's cultural epicenter since the gold rushes of the 1800s. The Denver Museum of Nature and Science and Denver Zoo are both educational and entertaining attractions for the entire family. The Denver Art Museum houses an excellent collection of American Indian art, among its other collections, and Denver's architecturally impressive Performing Arts Complex houses the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and the Colorado Ballet.
It's no secret that Denverites are an active bunch. Since Denver averages more sunny days per year than San Diego, outdoor exercise is a way of life. With miles of walking and jogging paths, bike lanes, and an extensive public transportation system, there are plenty of ways to get around town without a car. Denver has more than 200 city and mountain parks that are perfect for throwing a frisbee, picnicking, or hiking.
Denver's location also makes it a perfect jumping-off point for adventures throughout Colorado. Within a two hour drive you can be at the trailhead of a 14,000 ft mountain, or rafting through a spectacular canyon. Half of Colorado's nearly two dozen world-class ski resorts can be accessed as easy day trips from Denver.
Whether you're celebrating a successful summit attempt, or capping off a day of urban exploration, Denver has an array of bars, restaurants, and nightlife for any taste. Upscale dining, steakhouses, vegetarian cuisine, and good, old-fashioned saloons can all be found throughout Denver's distinct neighborhoods.
Lower Downtown, affectionately known as LoDo, is one of Denver's busiest districts. Its restored brick warehouses are home to shops, restaurants, and bars. The 16th Street pedestrian mall cuts through the heart of downtown and is a popular attraction. Cherry Creek, on the south end of town, offers art galleries and upscale shopping and dining, while Northwest Denver's Highlands neighborhood is the up and coming place to be with trendy restaurants opening all the time.
