Detroit pharmacist James Vernor was trying to create a new drink in 1862 when he was suddenly called away to fight in the Civil War. Four years later, the beverage he�d left in an ok cask had become ginger ale. These days the process is somewhat quicker.

The Chippewa Nature Center is 1,032-acre site with a 14-mile trail system, situated on over 3 miles of frontage where the Pine and Chippewa Rivers converge. Other features include a state-of-the-art interactive Ecosystem Gallery, a unique gift shop and a complex of 1800s log buidlings for exploring history.
