Both a tourist attraction and travel convenience, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge - Tunnel saves motorists time and mileage between Virginia Beach / Norfolk and points north of Wilmington, Delaware. The Bridge - Tunnel measures 17.6 miles and is considered the world's largest bridge - tunnel complex in the world. Fallowing it's opening on April 15 1964, the chesapeake Bay Bridge - Tunnel was selected as "One of Seven Engineering Wonders of the Modern World" and in 1965, it recieved "The Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievment" award by the American Society of Civil Engineers. In 2000 Structural Engineer magazine recognized the Bridge - Tunnel as one of seven structural engineering achievment of the 20th century.
