Danish Windmill "A Piece of Denmark Close to Home" |
| |
This authentic 60-foot working windmill was built in Nørre Snede, Denmark in 1848. In 1975, the mill was dismantled, shipped, and reconstructed in Elk Horn, Iowa by 300 community volunteers. It took 1 year and $100,000 to rebuild. This windmill stands as a proud tribute to the area’s Danish heritage. Visitors can climb to the top of the windmill, see the grinding stones and watch the sails go around on a windy day. The Mill House Gift Shop has lovely Danish collectibles, books, jewelry, food, and unique gift items. It is an official Iowa Welcome Center.
