Atlanta was first called Terminus in 1837, due to its location at the end of a rail line. In 1843 it was renamed Marthasville, after ex-governor Lumpkin’s daughter, Martha. It became Atlanta in1847, again courtesy of a railroad, the Georgia and Atlantic.
