The history of the BC Forest Discovery Centre starts in 1963. G.E. (Gerry) Wellburn, the founder of the centre, had been building his collection for many years on his 6 hectare (15 acres) property near Deerholme. He got great pleasure out of his collection, but he wanted to move it to a more public place for everyone to enjoy. By 1964, they decided upon using the original site, called the Drinkwater property. The property continues as part of the present site. Planning and developing got underway, and the museum was opened the next year.
In the present day, the centre has become one of Vancouver Island's favorite attractions. Since it's opening in 1965, the collection has grown, the grounds have been expanded to 100 acres, and the trains have rolled!
