Shantok: Village of Uncas

Shantok: Village of Uncas The site of the 17th century fortified village of Mohegan Sachem Uncas and nearby cemeteries.

Description   Uncas was a warrior, statesman, leader, and founder of the Mohegan Tribe. In 1635, Uncas broke from the Pequots and led his followers west of the Thames River to land called Shantok. They adopted the tribe's original name "Mohegan", meaning "Wolf People." The fortified village of Shantok was constructed during this period. The village site, a National Historic Landmark, is located on a defensible bluff along the banks of the Thames. Mohegans refer to the site as the "Cedar Grove." Additionally, two Mohegan Burial Grounds lie nearby. Shantok Burying Ground has been in continuous use for over 300 years.
