Iowa is a state known for its pigs, cows, corn and state fairs. It's also the birthplace to President Hoover and movie star John Wayne. Wholesome fun and family time are easy to find in the Hawkeye State.
Visiting Iowa in August? Make a point to go to the internationally acclaimed Iowa State Fair. You’ll see a variety of state fair attractions like animals and local artists that will give you a taste of what Iowa life is like. See great performances by some of your favorite artists and taste some fantastic fair food. Make sure you come hungry and stay to check out the famous Butter Cow.
If you’re looking for a place the whole family can enjoy, look no further than Adventureland in Des Moines. During the amusement park season you and your family will be able to enjoy the parks thrills when you ride the wooden rollercoaster: The Tornado. If smaller children are in your travel group, there are plenty of kiddie rides to explore. In the off season, you can check out all of the events that are held on the grounds.
Come see the animals at Iowa’s wildest adventure, Blank Park Zoo. There are over 104 different species in the zoo, both local and exotic. See bald eagles, lemurs, lions otters, parakeets and flamingos. Get closer to furry friends by participating in the Great Cats Experience or the Sea Lion and Penguin Experience. Visit the picnic grounds after purchasing concessions at Johnny's Italian Steakhouse inside the zoo.
Take some time to explore the arts, history and culture in Iowa at some of the best museums the state has to offer. Explore the galleries, paintings and exhibits at the Figge Art Museum or Museum of Art in Cedar Rapids. The Putnam Museum is a great place for kids to learn about science and history, or experience Midwestern rural life with a trip to the Living History Farms.
See turtles, fish and other marine life of the Mississippi River and Iowa at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium. The 4D Theater features new films and the exhibits are always being updated and are always changing.
