John L. Morris started selling fishing lures and bait from the back of his dad’s liquor store and set the stage for what would become the number 1 tourist attraction in Missouri. The original and largest Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World® features live fish, alligators and an exquisite wildlife display.

Springfield-Style Cashew Chicken was invented in 1963 when David Leong struggled to create an Asian dish that would appease local residents’ taste buds. The Leong family now runs Leong’s Asian Diner where Springfield-Style Cashew Chicken is a mainstay on the menu.

Springfield’s town square was the site of the nation’s first recorded Wild West shoot-out between Davis Tutt and “Wild Bill” Hickok in 1865. In a dispute over a pocket watch, the two squared off from 75 yards away. Tutt fired first, missing Hickok, who fired back, killing Tutt.

Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield preserves the site of the first major battle west of the Mississippi River. The Battle of Wilson’s Creek involved about 5,400 Union troops and 12,000 Confederates. Gen. Nathaniel Lyon was killed, the first Union general to die in combat.

Officially recognized as the birthplace of Route 66, it was in Springfield on April 30, 1926, that officials first proposed the name of the new Chicago to Los Angeles highway.
